If you have a brand new outdoor carpet or are thinking about installing one, you should know the answer to “are outdoor carpets waterproof?”. You may want to install an outdoor rug in your back yard, front porch or patio. But, is it really waterproof? Some drugs seem to be made of a kind of synthetic material that has the same properties as plastic. They may look like they’re made of real grass, but they are not!
The synthetic material does absorb the water from the ground, but that’s about all. Once it has soaked into the carpet, it does little more than fool around in a wet mess. Then, you have to wash it, and the more water it gets wet with, the harder it is to clean it. You might be able to avoid having to buy an outdoor carpet cleaning machine if you get an outdoor rug with some sort of chemical protection from the manufacturer.
But, are they waterproof? Well, most are treated with a resin to make them waterproof. However, some still have the water proofing chemical. To know what’s really going on, you’ll have to read the label on your product. It will say whether it’s water proof or water resistant, but the reality is, it’s only partly water proof and doesn’t provide a 100% solution.
Outdoor rugs do have the benefits of being waterproof but there are other issues involved as well. They are usually extremely durable, but you have to take that into consideration when looking at their value. Outdoor rugs are generally much more expensive than indoor ones, simply because of the special materials used. A normal rug will be made from a cotton/spandex mixture, while a water-resistant one is typically made from a polyester-based mixture. So, while both are highly durable and waterproof, only the water proofing rugs will last as long as you’d want.
Now, it’s true that some people claim that water proofing isn’t necessary, but there are plenty of benefits to it. First of all, you won’t have to worry about them getting ruined as easily, which is definitely good for those of us who love to entertain. Second of all, if you plan on installing outdoor carpets in high traffic areas, water proofing is definitely a good investment.
As you can see, it all depends on what exactly you need the protection for. If you want protection from small leaks, then no, they aren’t waterproof. However, if you need it for larger spills, then maybe they are the perfect choice for you. Now, are outdoor carpets waterproof?
