Is It OK To Have Mismatched Furniture?

Is it OK to have mismatched furniture? When I was growing up, friends of my mom’s would bring their drinks and plates into the living room after a dinner party. Other guests would drop by with drinks and plates. Things were just always ready for pickup.

In fact, when I got married, our family room had an armoire and a chest of drawers. My husband came in from work on Monday and brought a toolbox and workbench with him. We didn’t need much. But as we’ve grown, we’ve realized that the drawers were becoming an important storage space.

Over the years, our sons have become more concerned about their furniture. They want their toys to be where they need to be when they’re playing. They don’t want to have to go up and down ladders to get to their remote-controlled cars or Nerf guns. Today, they can find everything they need right there under the tree, safe and secure.

It’s hard to blame them. The last thing you want is for something to break on your lap while you’re watching television or reading the newspaper. Mismatching furniture isn’t always a bad thing, as long as it’s only mismatched in appearance. As long as you’re OK with that, it won’t cause you any trouble. But you may want to invest in some new furniture for your rooms so that your home looks more uniform.

When you’re shopping, check out all the options. Don’t settle for one thing. Be prepared to move mountains and spend hours looking for that perfect set. You’ll be happy that you did when you see how beautiful your finished product will look.

Just make sure that when you do buy this furniture, you try it out in your living space first. Don’t worry about sitting on it. If you can move around and sit, that would be great. Just make sure that it fits in with your home, with your lifestyle, with the other furniture in your home, etc. If you do that, you’ll be very pleased with your purchase.

You may be wondering what the big deal is. Isn’t it just a piece of furniture? Sure it is, but sometimes the furniture is mismatched because of one reason or another. If the mismatching is due to poor quality materials or workmanship, then you definitely don’t want to buy it.

You should also check to make sure that the furniture was built using good craftsmanship. If not, you should definitely take that route. Just be sure that the materials were good enough to withstand the climate where the furniture is located. The last thing you want is your beautiful new table or sofa to fall apart after a few months or a year. You can easily tell if the materials are poor or not by holding the item up to a light.

If they aren’t, then there’s something wrong. Either way, you should know why it happened in the first place. Did the shopkeeper do anything wrong? Were the materials or workmanship done wrong? Now that you have the answers to the question, “Why is it OK to have mismatched furniture?”
